Resident vs. Commuter

Broadening Horizons

Resident vs. Commuter

Resident (or live-in) students stay in one of Michigan Tech's residence halls, Wadsworth Hall, during their time at SYP. The halls are divided into groups of about ten students per one residence counselor. Male participants stay on the fifth floor of the residence hall, female participants on the fourth.

SYP is a great opportunity to meet new people, and we take care to match students with roommates who are similar in age but different in other areas (like geographic area, for example). If you want to stay with a sibling or friend, you must indicate so in the Confirmation Packet you'll receive after acceptance. Remember, both you and your friend must request each other on your forms or you will not be placed together.

The live-in cost for Summer 2017 was $895.

Commuter students attend camps/explorations during the day, but stay off-campus with a friend or family member in the Houghton area during the evenings. Some commuters are local students, while others stay with family, for example camping or in a hotel. If you choose to commute to SYP, you are welcome to stay for evening activities and dinner, however, you must purchase a dining hall pass.

The commuter cost for Summer 2017 was $475.
