Broadening Horizons

The World at SYP

Every year, our summer programs draw students from areas well beyond Michigan and the Midwest. Last year, participants came from throughout the country, and we welcomed more than 100 international student from South Korea, Bangladesh, Japan, Canada, and beyond.

Diversity at SYP is about more than just where our students come from. Our participants ranged from sixth through eleventh grades, and identified with many different ethnicities and cultures. From this past year, 39 percent of SYP participants were female, and 69 percent were from groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

"It might sound strange, but the ESP program taught me how to make friends. I usually don't open up and try to meet new people, but this week was different. I met new people and just decided to go with it. I was who I am and it worked out. The most challenging part of this program was leaving."
