Support Summer Youth Programs

Donate to SYP

Thank you to all of our past and current Summer Youth Programs sponsors and friends. Without you many of our summer participants would be unable to attend our programs. Our sponsors provide support each year in many forms that allow us provide programming to as many participants as possible each year and still remain one of the most affordable summer programs in the nation.

Please take the time to look at all of our generous corporate and private donors that have recently supported our programs. Support for our programs comes in many forms from not only corporate donors, but also foundations, the university and individuals in many forms:

  • Student Scholarships (partial or full)
  • Role model speakers
  • Supplies
  • Volunteer time

If you are interested in learning more about how you can help to support our programs, please contact Cody Kangas, Director, Center for Pre-College Outreach at ckangas@mtu.edu or (906) 487-2219.

Each year we receive donations from corporate donors, foundations, and individuals, which allow us to offer scholarships to summer participants who would otherwise not be able to attend our programs. Through our donors, over 50% of our participants each year receive some form of financial assistance. Students receive partial or full scholarships, some of which include transportation costs or additional stipends.

Even though we pride ourselves in remaining one of the most affordable summer programs in the nation, your support will help us to continue to provide our unique camp experiences to additional participants each summer.

Women's Competitive Scholarship Programs
at Michigan Tech

Scholarships provide opportunities for high-achieving young women in grades 6-11 to experience different areas of engineering at Michigan Tech's Summer Youth Programs. By hosting programs exclusively for girls, Michigan Tech is trying to change the widespread perception that STEM fields are only for males. Our main competitive programs for women are Women in Engineering, Women in Automotive Engineering, Women in Computer Science, and Junior Women in Engineering.  These programs need your sponsorship to provide opportunities to as many future female engineers and scientists as possible. Visit our Superior Ideas campaign page to donate. Students applying for all of these programs are highly competitive and motivated young people who come from widely varying backgrounds to ignite their passion and engage in an experience that will shape their lives and benefit society. Since 2009, of the WIE alumnae who reported their chosen college major to the National Student Clearinghouse, 63% pursued an engineering degree.

Summer Youth Programs Scholarship Fund

Michigan Tech's Summer Youth Programs were established in 1972. Since then we have built our programs to try and serve over 1,000 students each summer from all over the nation and world. Our summer programs are separated into three primary categories:

  • Middle School Explorations (Current 6th - 8th grade students)
  • Pre-College Explorations (current 9th - 11th grade students)
  • Competitive Scholarship Programs (current 9th - 11th grade students)

Many of our summer participants would not be able to attend our programs without your generous support. Scholarships for students are distributed in various amounts based on need and merit. Contributions can be specified for students of specific grade levels, for specific explorations, or for our Competitive Scholarship Programs.
