Live-in vs. Commuter

Live-Ins

Residential (or “live-in”) students stay in one of Michigan Tech's residence halls, Wadsworth Hall (“Wads”), during their time at SYP. Live-in students also receive a meal plan for the week, and linens are provided in each room.

During Summer Youth Programs, we control two floors of Wads: only SYP students and staff with designated access can swipe into our floors. For 2018, male students will live on the 3rd floor, and female students will live on the 4th floor.

We divide students into smaller groups (“halls”), each with a Residence Counselor assigned to them. The RCs are the ones who check in with students each evening, host hall meetings, and make sure that everyone is doing well.

SYP is a great opportunity to meet new people, and we take care to match students with roommates who are similar in age but different in other areas (like geographic area, for example). If you want to stay with a sibling or friend, you must indicate so in the Confirmation Packet you'll receive after acceptance. Remember, both you and your friend must request each other on your forms or you will not be placed together.

Wondering what to bring for a week in Wadsworth Hall? Check out our What to Pack page to learn more. Additional information will also be sent with your Welcome Packet in the weeks leading up to your program.

The live-in cost for Summer 2018 is $895 - see Tuition and Fees for more information.

Commuters

Commuter students attend camps/explorations during the day, but stay off-campus with a friend or family member in the Houghton area during the evenings. Some commuters are local students, while others stay with family, for example camping or in a hotel. The Summer Youth Programs office will need the student's local address and phone number, and the participant must agree to follow all live-in student rules while on campus. Several of our explorations involve travel or late-evening activities and are not available to commuters, so be sure to note if a program is live-in only!

Commuter students receive a meal plan that covers their lunches each weekday. In addition, all commuter students are welcome to join us for our Monday night trip to McLain State Park! We provide transportation to and from campus for the entire group of SYP participants, grill up hundreds of servings of food, and enjoy Lake Superior!

Any commuters are also welcome to stay for other evening activities and dinner throughout the week, however, you must purchase a dining hall pass from the SYP front desk.

The commuter cost for Summer 2018 is $495 - see Tuition and Fees for more information.

Parking

Both live-in and commuter students may opt to drive themselves to campus. However, please be aware that:

  • Any student bringing a vehicle will be responsible for purchasing a parking pass from the SYP front desk.
  • Live-in students will not be permitted to drive during the week; your keys must be turned in to the SYP front desk and will be securely stored.

Check out Transportation for more information.
