Check-In and Check-Out

Finding the Registration Area

If you arrive by car, there will be sandwich board signs on the highway indicating where to park at Wadsworth Hall. Signs will direct you to the check-in area, located in the basement of Wadsworth Hall. Counselors will be there to greet you, give directions, and help with the registration process.

For the many students who arrive on the charter bus, you will roll into campus around 9:00 AM on Sunday morning. An SYP coordinator will meet you at the bus and direct you to registration.

If you arrive by plane, an SYP staff member will meet you at the airport and drive you to campus.

See Transportation for more information about these ways to arrive.

Registration runs from 10:00 AM through 2:00 PM on the Sunday of each program week. You must register before moving into your room! The process includes:

  • A check by student coordinators to make sure your paperwork is complete (if it's not, you'll be asked to complete it)
  • Taking a photo and receiving your SYP ID - an RFID card (tap access) which will get you onto your floor and into the dining hall
  • Receiving your room key and handbook, while reviewing basic program rules

Medicine and Valuables Check-In

If you bring any medicine (prescription or over-the-counter), it must be checked in at the front desk. Our front desk staff will keep detailed notes on what medications you take and when - simply come to the desk to get it when needed.

Students who require an emergency epi-pen or inhaler may keep these items.

The SYP front desk also has a safe for students who wish to store valuables such as keys, jewelry, or extra spending cash. Students are expected to lock their rooms when they are away; Summer Youth Programs is not responsible for lost or stolen property.

Move Into Your Room

Counselors will help you move your luggage and show you where your room is. From there, you can feel free to move in, get comfortable, and hang out before Orientation! Remember: you are responsible for the care and condition of your room; you can be assessed fees if you break or damage anything.

Before you turn in your key, be sure to meet with a counselor so that he or she can check your room. You need to pack and clean up before your counselor arrives! They will go over a checklist to make sure that nothing is damaged, broken, or missing. You can then turn in your key, visit the front desk to collect your medicine and valuables, and sign out. If you arrived by car or with your family, you are free to go.

If you need to make a flight out of Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX), an SYP staff member will drive you and make sure you get checked in at the airport. Make sure you know the plan!

Charter Bus Departure

The charter bus leaves Michigan Tech around 10 PM on Friday nights. You need to be checked out well in advance of this. Your luggage can be stored in the dining hall between the time that you check out of your room and when you need to get on the bus. A bus chaperone will take roll to make sure everyone is on board, and then you will be headed home.
