Staff Bios

Cody Kangas, Director
Cody received his Masters in Education Administration from Michigan State University, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Management from the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan. Prior to coming to Michigan Tech in 2008, he worked in several academic and athletic outreach programs, including Ann Arbor Public Schools and the United States Olympic Committee. While at Michigan Tech Cody has served on a number of task forces and steering committees, managed the delivery of innovative outreach programming for several hundred-thousand students and families through federal and private-funded sponsors, and created innovative partnerships with stakeholders across K-12 schools, industry representatives, and non-profit organizations. He is a proud father of two girls and spends his free time with his wife and family, travelling, and relaxing on the lake.

Amanda McConnon, Assistant Director
Amanda McConnon is a U.P. native who attended Hancock High School and received a Bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University in Graphic Communications. She led marketing and event planning at Greenway Station Shopping Center in Middleton, WI from 2009-2014 and implemented several new events in partnership with local non-profits. In 2015 she joined the staff at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI as the Assistant Director in the Center for Pre-college Outreach. There she works to bring together industry and community partners from across the United States to inspire the next generation to become the future STEM workforce. Additionally, she has a passion for helping young professionals get engaged in the community and fosters collaboration and growth by serving on the steering committee for Keweenaw Young Professionals since 2013 and as the President in 2016.

Liz Fujita, Assistant Director
Liz is a Michigan Tech graduate with a degree in mathematics and social sciences. Her work at the Center for Pre-College Outreach has included coordinating local outreach events, administering the GEAR UP grant, logistical support for Summer Youth Programs, and assisting with Mind Trekkers events. Liz is actively involved in both Michigan Tech and the greater community, including as a member of the Copper Country Reading Council. In her free time, Liz can be found reading, hiking, kayaking, gardening, and enjoying life in the Keweenaw.

Jannah Brandt, Coordinator, Mind Trekkers
Jannah is a Michigan Tech graduate who has been involved with Mind Trekkers throughout her time as a student. Jannah has a BS in Biomedical Engineering and is currently pursuing her MBA. Jannah’s work in the Center for Pre-College Outreach includes the planning and execution of Mind Trekkers events across the country as well as logistical support for Summer Youth Programs. In her free time, she likes spending time with friends and family and trying new recipes.

Lauren Kirwin, Coordinator, College Access
Lauren is a Michigan Tech graduate who discovered her passion in working with STEM promotion during her summers with the Center for Pre-College Outreach's Summer Youth Programs. In her free time she enjoys hiking, reading, and traveling.

Rose Martell, Administrative Aide
Rose received her BS in Education in English and Art from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She worked for 17 years in the banking and investment industry. Rose joined the CPCO staff in 2001. She has 3 grown children and 7 grandchildren--all 7 and under, so is having LOTS of fun with them! She enjoys all wilderness activities, reading, travel, and perennial gardening.

Summer Staff

Each summer, Youth Programs hires approximately 80-100 summer employees (residence hall staff and instructors) to help us to provide a safe and enjoyable summer for all of our participants. Employees are primarily undergraduate and graduate students and teachers. Our summer staff is an enthusiastic group with a passion to impact the lives of each of our participants.
