Transportation Information

You must arrange for your transportation to and from campus. We recommend that all participants bring our contact information while traveling so that we can be notified of any delays.

By Car

Many students choose to drive to campus with their families or friends. Students arriving by car can be dropped off at the front entrance of Wadsworth Hall to check in - afterward, families may drive their car behind Wadsworth to unload luggage.

Live-in participants who drive themselves to the program will receive details about where to park when they arrive. You will not be permitted to drive while attending Summer Youth Programs, and you will be required to purchase a week-long parking pass upon arrival. You will be asked to keep your keys in the Summer Youth Programs safe at the residence hall until the end of the program.

By Summer Youth Programs Charter Bus

We provide charter bus transportation to participants throughout the state of Michigan (and some weeks, through Wisconsin). Our busses are chaperoned and come equipped with bathrooms and movies to watch during the ride. This can be a great way for you to meet other students before arriving on campus.

Participants are picked up on Saturday evenings and travel through the night to get to campus on Sunday morning. Likewise at the end of the week, students depart from campus on Friday evening and arrive home on Saturday morning. If you choose to take the charter bus, you will receive pick-up and drop-off locations and times from our office prior to the start of the program. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority will be given to round-trip riders.

  • Round Trip-$275 (You may choose to be picked up and dropped off at different locations and still qualify for a round-trip). This includes a $25 non-refundable deposit. After June 1st there are no refunds.
  • One Way-$175. Includes a $25 non-refundable deposit. After June 1st there are no refunds.

Charter transportation requests are not guaranteed until you receive confirmation from the Summer Youth Programs office. If you request a seat after we have reached full capacity, you will receive a full refund of any transportation fees paid (including the non-refundable $25 deposit).

By Plane

Our local airport, Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX), located just fifteen minutes from campus. The airport is served by United Airlines, and all flights to/from CMX connect through Chicago O'Hare (ORD).

We urge all parents and legal guardians to review United Airlines’ unaccompanied minor policy prior to booking flights.

If you are arriving by plane, you will be picked up from the airport by our Summer Youth Programs staff. We will make these arrangements based on the arrival and departure times that you provide. Please provide a copy of your flight itinerary to our office once arrangements have been made so we can plan accordingly.

Visit United Airlines or call 800-864-8331 for ticketing information.

By Bus (Other than SYP Charter Bus)

Houghton is serviced by Indian Trails/Greyhound, with stops on campus at the Memorial Union Building.

If you are arriving by Indian Trails or Greyhound bus, you will be picked up at the bus station. We will make these arrangements based on the arrival and departure times that we are provided. Please provide a copy of your bus itinerary to our office once arrangements have been made so we can plan accordingly.

Visit the Indian Trails website or call 800-292-3831 for route scheduling and more information.
