Staff Bios

Cody Kangas, Director
Cody received his Masters in Education Administration from Michigan State University, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Management from the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan. Prior to coming to Michigan Tech in 2008, he worked in several academic and athletic outreach programs, including Ann Arbor Public Schools and the United States Olympic Committee. While at Michigan Tech Cody has served on a number of task forces and steering committees, managed the delivery of innovative outreach programming for several hundred-thousand students and families through federal and private-funded sponsors, and created innovative partnerships with stakeholders across K-12 schools, industry representatives, and non-profit organizations. He is a proud father of two girls and spends his free time with his wife and family, travelling, and relaxing on the lake.

Amanda McConnon, Assistant Director
Amanda McConnon is a U.P. native who received a Bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University in Graphic Communications. Prior to starting at Michigan Tech in 2015, she worked as the Marketing Coordinator for a lifestyle shopping center in Middleton, WI where she created and lead all marketing, advertising, community events and public relations efforts. During that time she was an active Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce and she continued her efforts in community growth and engagement when she moved back to the U.P. by serving on the steering committee for Keweenaw Young Professionals (KYP) since 2013 and as the KYP president in 2016. In her free time she enjoys golfing, running, painting and skiing.

Liz Fujita, Coordinator, Summer Youth Programs
Liz Fujita, Coordinator, Summer Youth Programs. "Liz is a Michigan Tech graduate with a degree in mathematics and social sciences. Her work at the Center for Pre-College Outreach has included coordinating local outreach events, administering the GEAR UP grant, logistical support for Summer Youth Programs, and assisting with Mind Trekkers events. Liz is actively involved in both Michigan Tech and the greater community, including as a member of the Copper Country Reading Council. In her free time, Liz can be found reading, hiking, kayaking, gardening, and enjoying life in the Keweenaw.

Jannah Brandt, Coordinator, Mind Trekkers
Jannah is a Michigan Tech graduate who has been involved with Mind Trekkers throughout her time as a student. She has served on the organization's Executive Board and is now looking forward to continuing her involvement promoting STEM education to students. In her free time, Jannah enjoys cooking, being in the outdoors, and spending time with her family and friends.

Rose Martell, Administrative Aide
Rose received her BS in Education in English and Art from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She worked for 17 years in the banking and investment industry. Rose joined the CPCO staff in 2001. She has 3 grown children and enjoys all wilderness activities, reading, travel, and perennial gardening.

Summer Staff

Each summer, Youth Programs hires approximately 80-100 summer employees (residence hall staff and instructors) to help us to provide a safe and enjoyable summer for all of our participants. Employees are primarily undergraduate and graduate students and teachers. Our summer staff is an enthusiastic group with a passion to impact the lives of each of our participants.
